Choral Conducting Institute

Harold Rosenbaum Choral Conducting Institute 🎵

I invited Harold for a brief residency at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, where I serve as the program director of Sacred Music. The conducting students were in the midst of their final projects, which required them to conduct a piece with the SATB Schola. I thought this might be a perfect opportunity to have Harold critique and workshop the students with the choir. During his time with them, three things stood out to me:

First – as many of us immediately notice with Harold’s musicianship – the balance he strikes between mastery of complex musical concepts translated into conducting and complete physical relaxation. One of the Schola members approached me after Harold’s workshop and said, “He’s like a puppeteer and moves us around with sound.”

Second – Harold’s experience as a veteran pedagogue surfaces almost immediately. He began a conducting class of seven students and, within five minutes, diagnosed and corrected problems. He met students where they were, acknowledged what they did well, and addressed areas of improvement with both humble support but exacting professionalism. It’s the kind of measured response that comes with wisdom and experience.

Third – Harold is almost too generous with his time. I invited him initially to work with the conducting students, but he wound up working with my Women’s Choir, gave 45-minute private lessons to about ten students, and also offered an interactive talk on how to compose effectively for the voice.

The students were extremely appreciative to work with such a choral master and gained new perspectives on the art of both singing and conducting. It was a wonderful, completely worthwhile experience for us all.
